Students Visit Virgin Atlantic
Updated: Feb 19
As part of our postgraduate offering at Bournemouth University, the Disaster Management Centre delivers a Crisis and Disaster Management unit to Tourism, Events and Hospitality Masters students.
This unit is designed to develop students understanding of the needs and critical resources of the Tourism, Hospitality and Events sectors, to assist them in building an awareness of the issues associated with effective integration of these sectors with emergency management frameworks.
As part of this four-week long unit, students had the chance to attend The Base at Gatwick; Virgin Atlantic’s training facility and hear from their Head of Operations, Planning and Resilience. Spending a whole day at Virgin's facilities, students experienced cabin evacuation training and had the opportunity to understand how crises and incidents are handled by the emergency response teams both in Head Office and on the ground. This visit helped showcase how disaster management functions in the ‘real world’ and highlighted the procedural and operational implications of companies when facing a disaster or crisis. The students then got to showcase some of the lessons learnt during this trip throughout our simulated travel and tourism exercise later that week
